July 2, 2018 - southwestern North Dakota: A powerful supercell storm producing large hail and high winds roared over the prairie as we scrambled to stay ahead of it. The storm dissipated at sunset and was followed by a second, smaller but equally impressive supercell with a flying-saucer mesocyclone and brainstorming lightning bolts.
Yellowstone and Grand Teton
May 10-12, 2023 - northwest Wyoming: The Greater Yellowstone Wilderness is home to some of the most spectacular scenery and geology in North America. Three days spent exploring Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are not nearly enough to take it all in. Some points of interest we had the pleasure of seeing include the historic Moulton farmsteads at Grand Teton, Yellowstone's world-famous Old Faithful geyser, the roaring falls of the Yellowstone River, and herds of wild bison with their young calves.
Burning skies and lightning bugs
June 18, 2021 - southwest of Columbus, Ohio: A giant tornado-producing thunderstorm complex put on a spectacular light show beneath the north side of its enormous anvil cloud, as flaming sunset light shined on skittering bolts of spider lightning. Some bolts jumped through the clouds from over the horizon to right overhead and back into the distance, traveling dozens of miles in a few seconds.
National Parks of Washington
May 2022 - Washington: The breathtaking scenery of North Cascades, Olympic, and Mount Rainier National Parks. I planned a family vacation that took us from snowy mountain ridges and volcanic cliffs to the lush rainforests and rocky coastline, as well as Mount St Helens National Monument.
Big Storm Country
May 8, 2021 - Salina, Kansas: A high-precipitation supercell storm cast a shadow across the plains against the setting sun, hurtling lightning bolts until they came too close for comfort. Later that night, a second supercell passed over the same area, continuously lit by strobing lightning coming in all directions.
Shenandoah National Park
July 24, 2021 - Shenandoah National Park, Virginia: The smoky mountains of southern Appalachia on full display. The final photo shows basalt lava formations similar to Devil's Tower in Wyoming, created by splitting continents and massive volcanic eruptions hundreds of millions of years ago.
Fire and water
July 19, 2016 - Outer Banks, North Carolina: A thunderstorm complex blowing up just after dark and producing what is still the most intense lightning display I've ever seen just down the beach.
David's Vista
October 17, 2021 - Centre County, Pennsylvania: David's Vista along the crest of Tussey Ridge provides views of Pennsylvania's famous fall colors.
Lone star skies
May 9 - 11, 2021 - Texas: In between chasing storms we racked up the mileage around the open Texas countryside, heading past Dallas, Waco, San Angelo, and Amarillo. The first set of photos is a mini-supercell just outside Waco at sunset. The second set is moody skies over western Texas and a drive through Caprock Canyons in the Panhandle.
Standing in a field for two hours
August 15, 2019 - Mercer, Pennsylvania: A series of thunderstorm passing through western Pennsylvania allowed for some moody, minimalist shots different than what I usually do, as well as the chance to stand beneath the churning underbelly of a supercell storm.
Tailing a derecho
June 10, 2020 - Ohio: A fast moving supercell-linear hybrid storm (first two photos) rapidly grew upscale into a derecho, a huge line of powerful thunderstorms producing damaging winds across hundreds of miles. At sunset we stayed behind it to watch some spectacular colors spread across the sky, punctuated with webs of lightning skittering through the clouds.
Badlands National Park
July 1, 2018 - southwestern South Dakota: While cutting distance between storm target areas, we stopped at Badlands National Park, a region where the vast prairie opens up into a ragged sandy chasm spanning across the horizon. I was able to shoot the wild bison from a comfortable distance until they got annoyed with the onlookers and hurried across the road to scare everybody off.
